The coin’s price rose by more than 1,000% on Wednesday
The Grumpy Cat meme coin (GRUMPY) community has donated 39 ETH worth almost $70,000 to the Sterling Animal Shelter in Massachusetts. The GRUMPY community, known for holding drives and donating to various charities and shelters, was in the news earlier this week after the meme coin’s price surged by more than 1,000% in one day.
The 39 ETH donation, which was earlier reported as being worth $80,000 is currently worth $10,000 less due to the extremely volatile price of GRUMPY. In a social media post, the community thanked the more than 150 million members who donated the amount in GRUMPY towards saving kittens through the Sterling Animal Shelter.
Based on Tardar Sauce, an internet celebrity famous for her perpetual grumpy appearance, the meme coin is focused on “making successful efforts for all of our community members as well as the world by giving back”, the project’s website grumpy.finance said.
The coin was listed on UniSwap earlier this month and $GRUMPY was also added to CoinGecko on March 16. In the famous surge earlier this week, the coin’s market capitalization jumped from $5 million to $50 million and it reported a trading volume of more than $18 million on March 17. Currently, the price of GRUMPY sits at $0.00000050, down 30% $0.00000074 from its all-time high two days ago. The total supply of the coin is now 1000 billion, with a circulating supply of 450 billion.
GRUMPY is an RFI token that returns tx fees to holder wallets. Holders can earn rewards from the 1% fee charged on all transactions and this is redistributed to all the holders of the coin. The Sterling Animal shelter is the cryptocurrency’s first fundraiser with more such charity events to come in order to gain support for the animal shelters.
Grumpy Cat has also turned into an NFT this month. Self-described as the “Worst NFT Ever”, it depicts a photo of Sauce. It fetched over 44 ETH (worth $78,000) on the NFT marketplace foundation on March 13.
The Grumpy Cat community-driven project has shown elements similar to that of the Dogecoin community. The Doge meme coin community launched the Dogecoin Foundation charity back in 2014.
